The Chairman of Railway Board, AK Mittal, said that sudden flash floods had led to the derailment of twin trains in Madhya Pradesh. Mittal said that, 10 minutes before the incident, trains had passed safely on the spot but it appears that sudden flash floods in these 10 minutes cut a portion of earth beneath it causing derailment of the train. He said that all passengers have been rescued and those with minor injuries were provided with first aid. He added that all passengers have been moved safely to Itarsi. Mittal also said that the passengers will be taken to the destination locations via special trains from Itarsi. He also added that investigation will be held in the incident.
The PRO of Railways Anil Saxena on Wednesday confirmed twelve deaths in the twin train derailment incident of Madhya Pradesh. Saxena said that rescue operations are in the last phase. He also said a compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the family of the deceased while Rs 50, 000 will be given to those critically injured. He added that Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu has expressed condolences to the families of those affected. Saxena also said that Commissioner Railway Safety will probe into the mishap.
At least ten bogies of two passenger trains derailed and fell into a river near Harda in Madhya Pradesh late on Tuesday night. According to reports, 25 people have been injured in the mishap and more than 300 people have been rescued so far. Local reports said that seven coaches of the Mumbai-Varanasi Kamayani Express derailed late in the night while crossing the bridge over the River Machak, near the Kudawa Railway Station, which is around 25 kilometers from Harda. Minutes later, three coaches and the engine of the Jabalpur-Mumbai Janata Express, which was travelling in the opposite direction, also derailed. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu said in a tweet that he has ordered for the rushing emergency medical and other relief personnel to spot. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed his condolences through twitter. Three special trains carrying doctors and rescue personnel have been dispatched to the spot. Relief teams could not be sent by road due to heavy water logging. All private and government hospitals in Harda have been alerted and made ready to accommodate the victims. At least 25 trains from Mumbai have been diverted as a result of the mishap. Trains from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have been temporarily halted. Trains may be diverted via Rajasthan-Kota route.

Governor PB Acharya formally inaugurated the bamboo toilets at the Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre at Dimapur as a part of the central government's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Drive). The 2 prototype toilets were an outcome of a 5-day training on "Bamboo toilets for private and community" jointly organized by Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency and South Asia Bamboo Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation. These eco-friendly toilets can be developed at an affordable price and can play an important role in improving sanitation facilities in the country. The governor has also assured that the government will take steps to promote these toilets.
