Asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concern towards the climate changes came from his passion for the cause and not due to any 'compulsions', Union minister of state for coal, power and renewable energy Piyush Goyal said that India can be proud of its role in the Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris. Stressing on the importance of the awareness of global warming, he added that its impact was quite visible in the past few years and the world has now realised that if the issue is not addressed soon, the end result could be catastrophic. The Union Minister expressed confidence that India was one of the nation's which was showing leadership in terms of expanding renewable energy, looking at innovations, technology, ways to expand energy security and raising concerns for the environment.
A delegation of pro-talk ULFA leaders headed by Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa held meeting with Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and other senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Assam Government in New Delhi. The ULFA leaders appealed to the Centre to include recently deported 'general secretary' Anup Chetia in the peace process saying the dialogue would remain inconclusive without his participation. Union Home Secretary asked the Government of India's Representative P C Haldar to examine the request of ULFA leaders. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said the central government is expecting a breakthrough in the ongoing talks with the ULFA soon. ULFA leader Shashadhar Choudhury said the next round of talks with the central government will be held next month in which Chetia is expected to take part. Chetia, who was arrested upon his deportation from Bangladesh about a fortnight ago, is currently in a jail in Guwahati. The Rajkhowa-led ULFA faction had begun unconditional talks with the Central government in 2011, despite strong opposition from the hardline wing led by Paresh Baruah, who is believed to be in Myanmar.
Engineers and workers of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited are working round the clock to set up the 47 km transmission line from Western Tripura to southern Comilla in eastern Bangladesh. India will ensure supply of additional 100 MW electricity to Bangladesh from December 16, when the country will celebrate Bijoy Dibosh or Victory Day. Eighteen km of this line and 67 of the 143 transmission towers fall in the Indian Territory. The 100 MW would be in addition to 500 MW that Bangladesh is presently receiving from West Bengal. Tripura government has decided to export 100 MW to Bangladesh from its share of 196 MW power from the Palatana power plant in reciprocation of Bangladesh allowing Tripura to use its ports to transport the heavy equipment for the 726 MW Palatana project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the power supply from Tripura with his counterpart Sheikh Hasina during his Dhaka visit in June this year. Tripura's location and socio-economic linkages with Bangladesh makes the state a potential hub for trade with and through Bangladesh from the entire northeastern region of India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Paris on Sunday to attend the World Climate Change Conference 2015 (COP21) in Paris, which starts on Monday. Almost 200 nations will meet in the French capital on November 30 to try and seal a deal to prevent the planet from warming more than the 2 degrees celsius that scientists say is vital if the world is to avoid the most devastating effects of climate change. The summit will run until December 11. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will deliver a speech on India's Strategy to contain global warming on Monday at the Leaders Event of the conference. The Prime Minister is also expected to speak on steps taken by India to reduce its carbon footprint and on serious consequences of the global warming. According to reports, an international agreement on climate change is likely to emerge from the 21st Conference of Parties of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday attempted to downplay his father Farooq Abdullah's 'all of India's forces can't defend against terrorists' remark and stressed on the need for a political resolution to the Kashmir issue through talks between India and Pakistan. He added we want talks to take place and we have always been in favour of finding solutions through dialogues. But the truth is that the relation between the two countries is so stressed that it is difficult to decide the level of the talks and where. The current situation is such that we are not even ready to play a cricket match against each other.
